Showcasing Jessica’s Choice – Natural Resources Defense Council

Jessica moved up from San Francisco several years ago. She decided 2024 was the year to buy a home in the area. She knew she wanted to be within cycling distance of friends in North Seattle, and really wanted a garage to store all the gear she has accumulated as she has become a Northwest outdoor lover. She was hoping for a 2 bedroom home, but I helped to find her a lovely three bedroom home in Ballard.

When I asked her which charity she would like me to support, she chose two that were close to her heart. The first one is Natural Resources Defense Council. She said, “I was initially made aware of NRDC while I was teaching undergrads at UW about food waste. They have great resources for helping reduce food waste, which in turn is a great way for us to support the environment on a personal level while they work on bigger issues at the policy level”.

NRDC uses science, policy, law, and people power to confront the climate crisis, protect public health, and safeguard nature. Some of the issues they tackle is deforestation, climate change, clean air and water, and preserving our nature and wildlife. They educate, and work with law makers to make policies that protect our natural resources so that our eco-system can exist. They fight the big companies that contaminate our drinking water and pollute the air we breath. On their website, they list many ways that you and I can also help; for example, buying toilet paper that does not lead to eliminating boreal forests (click here for the list, https://www.nrdc.org/stories/best-worst-tissue-brands). Did you know that the Canadian Boreal is being cut down at a rate of 1 million acres per year in part to feed the demand of paper products such as paper towels and toilet paper?
