Showcasing Hugh’s Choice – Bike Works

Hugh and I met in a fitness class at the health club over 20 years ago. We reconnected at a spin class led by an amazing cyclist – Ed Ewing. We’ve been friends ever since – united by a love of cycling. He has asked my advice about what upgrades to make at his house over the years. As retirement approached, he asked me to help him sell his home so that he could begin a new chapter as a digital nomad until he finds his retirement dream property along the way. When I asked him which charity he would like me to support, he chose Bike Works, the organization of which Ed Ewing is the Executive Director.

Bike Works Seattle, founded in 1996, is a nonprofit that uses the bicycle as a tool for positive change, focusing on youth empowerment, community resilience, and environmental sustainability. Based in Southeast Seattle, one of the city’s most diverse and underserved areas, the organization provides programs like youth bike repair classes, leadership training, and summer camps, alongside adult mechanics workshops and volunteer opportunities. Through its community bike shop, mobile repair services, and bicycle recycling efforts, Bike Works makes cycling accessible and affordable while generating support for its programs. With a strong commitment to equity, it partners with schools, community centers, and BIPOC-led organizations to expand opportunities, break down systemic barriers, and foster thriving, inclusive communities.
