Showcasing Kyle’s Choice – Wheelchairs for Nigeria

I met Kyle through one of my clients. He wanted to find a new place close by to his current home, but with attributes that suited him better. Between lots of traveling I was able to help him close on the perfect home for him. When I asked him which charity he would like me to support, he chose one that was started by a friend, Wheelchairs for Nigeria.
Wheelchairs for Nigeria is a Seattle – based nonprofit that serves children and adults that have survived polio. Through a bicycle shop in Jos, Nigeria, to provide free, low-cost, hand-pedaled wheelchairs to By building the wheelchairs locally from bicycle parts, the organization keeps costs low (about $150 per unit) and supports local employment, including staff with disabilities. Since its founding, it has distributed over 33,000 wheelchairs in 28 Nigerian states and also supports blind and deaf students through equipment donations and school infrastructure improvements, offering mobility, dignity, and opportunity to thousands.
Nigeria has more polio survivors than any other country, with tens of thousands of children and adults forced to crawl on the ground due to a lack of mobility aids. While billions have been spent on eradicating polio—with the last known cases in Nigeria reported in 2016—little has been done to help those already disabled by the disease, many of whom remain hidden and forgotten. In response, Dr. Ron Rice, a retired Presbyterian pastor, and his Nigerian partner Ayuba Gufwan, a polio survivor himself, have built and donated over 26,000 hand-pedaled, three-wheeled “tricycles” through their shop in Jos, Nigeria. With 60 employees—five of whom are polio survivors—they produce these wheelchairs for just $150 each, transforming lives by giving recipients access to school, jobs, and dignity. Given freely to both Christians and Muslims, the wheelchairs also serve as a powerful act of peace and compassion in a country often divided by religion and conflict. Yet the need remains overwhelming, with many disabled individuals still waiting, and often turned away, due to limited supply.
