My friend, T, wanted to add a Level 2 EV charger to his older home with a 100 Amp electric panel. There was no room or capacity to add another 240 v circuit. He thought he’d have to upgrade his electric service to 200 amps and get a new electric panel. He got some bids and was flummoxed by the cost. He happened to see an article that explained how one 240 v circuit could power two 240 v appliances like a dryer or oven AND an EV charger without overloading the system. It employs a smart switch that shuts off EV charging anytime the other appliance is turned on. The EV home charger load balancing system manages power intelligently between two devices. For example, when your oven or HVAC is running, the switch automatically pauses EV charging. Once the primary appliance turns off, EV charging resumes seamlessly, keeping your home safe and energy-efficient.

Smart Outlet Splitter

Another application of the technology is a 240 v outlet splitter. It plugs into an existing 240 v outlet and has 2 240 v outlets. Maybe you are contemplating a 2^nd EV or already have two. If your current panel doesn’t have room to add another fast charger outlet, will you:

• Spend $12,000+ to upgrade your service level and panel?
• If you already have one charger, spend $3,000 on a panel upgrade to add a 2^nd Level 2 charger?
• Constantly switch which car’s cord gets plugged in?
• Relegate one car to slow 120 v trickle charging and the other gets fast charging?

OR

• You can add a smart splitter to the existing 240 v outlet. It plugs in the existing outlet and provides two 240 v outlets. The smart switch charges the car on the primary outlet first, then switches power to the second car. Wake up to 2 fully charged cars.
