Showcasing Christine and Luke’s Choice – Home Range Wildlife Research

When Christine and Luke got married, they moved into the home Christine owned and rented out the home Luke owned. They decided after many years it was time to sell the rental property. We met up many months before the tenant’s lease ended to strategize the best time to come on the market, plan what projects could be done in the intervening months, and schedule additional work to be done once the tenant was gone. Meeting very early in the process allowed them to work with the tenant to get workers on the property and get projects done without time pressure. If you are thinking about selling sometime in the next year or two, its never to early to meet! The early, the easier!

When I asked them which charity they would like me to support, they chose Home Range Wildlife Research, a group in which Christine has been collaborating with on their Lynx and Wildfire project (first as a field biologist, and now as a graduate student) since 2023. Their research project seeks to understand how the increasing frequency, extent, and severity of wildfires are affecting Canada lynx across their range in Washington State, how lynx are using these burned areas over time, and ultimately inform wildlife and forestry management strategies that help reduce habitat loss as fires grow larger and hotter.

Home Range is a grassroots, woman-founded wildlife research and conservation nonprofit based in Winthrop, Washington, working to protect wildlife in the North Cascades. Their three major pillars are research, education, and community engagement. Teams spend much of the year in the field collecting vital data, supporting science-based conservation, and training the next generation of wildlife biologists. They also enthusiastically share what they learn—with the public, students, and anyone who cares about the natural world.

Through year-round field research and monitoring, the organization helps track the health and movement of species across one of the most ecologically diverse regions in the Pacific Northwest. Its work supports collaborative conservation efforts focused on habitat preservation, biodiversity, and the long-term survival of sensitive and threatened wildlife populations. By partnering with scientists, land managers, educators, and local communities, the organization aims to inspire stewardship of the natural world while helping equip future generations with the knowledge and tools needed to protect these wild landscapes.
